Take the humble bowl. I'm a bloke, a bowl was something I threw my change into in the evenings or that I ate my cornflakes out of in the morning (not the same one, obviously!). A functional item that never got a second glance. Well, bowls have come a long way, from the purely functional to the decorative and aesthetic. Bowls that amaze and delight and those that are simply too good to put fruit in. They are works of art in their own right, that can be proudly displayed in the centre of your room or as a focal point on a fine table or sideboard.
You see, I am not sure whether it is a gender thing, and we do have some stunning bowls in the gallery, but although most men will nod in appreciation of a well made bowl it is women that get excited by them. I have heard on more than one occasion women exclaiming "Wow!" or "Oh God!" whilst staring into some exquisite creations. Now, I have been known to utter the words "Oh God!" whilst staring down a bowl but for entirely different reasons which I won't go into right now!
I think it is because - and I generalise here - that men see beauty and function as being integral, but women will often appreciate beauty in it's own right. For men, it's sort of like cars: beauty and function. Or houses: beauty and function. Or women: beauty and function, you know, she's a looker and can knock up a good lasagne. Men are simple creatures, don't you know.
Women, of course, are much more refined and appreciate beautiful things because they are just that, beautiful. They like to be surrounded by things that their only purpose is to be pleasing to the eye. Makes you wonder where men fit in to their equation, doesn't it?
Anyway, whatever the reasons, we have lots of lovely bowls created by local designers. Bowls made from glass or ceramics or wood. The designs are as diverse as they are unique. Check out some of them here or if you are nearby, pop into the gallery and enter another dimension. You'll be sick if you don't!
