There has been a long history of mining in Cornwall, everybody knows about tin and copper, as well as arsenic, but silver and gold have also been prolific here. Most of the mines are closed now but the long tradition of the Cornish silversmith still survives with the influence of myths and legends and Celtic pride.
The distinctive Cornish style lives on with local silversmith Margaret Bolton who produces her sterling silver and high carat gold jewellery to exacting standards, continuing the tradition started by her late husband Michael Bolton, an internationally renowned master of his craft. We are delighted to have Margaret's work here at West Gallery.
Margaret continues to follow Michael's successful work in silver and gold which is inspired by the magic and aura of Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon metalwork, the romanticism of the King Arthur legends, and the ethics and ideology of the late 19th and 20th century British Arts and Crafts movement.
The distinctive hammered approach to the silver material accentuates the malleability of its surface, creating a unique finish. The look is contemporary but oozes the history and the mysticism of ancient Cornwall from King Arthur to Poldark.
Margaret and Michael worked with young designers and assistants near Launceston in Cornwall many of whom now keep the tradition alive. Clients included: The Worshipful Companies of Goldsmiths, Cutlers and Carpenters; the Indian High Commission in Brussels; Glenda Jackson, Julie Andrews and Stanley Kubrick.
Margaret's designs are chunky yet delicate resembling the sumptuous extravagance of some medieaval haul, some set with gemstones others exalting their hallmarks with pride. A collection of fine jewellery that states sophistication and pedigree. What more could a girl want?
