From an early age I was always creative. Drawing and sketching things, making stuff and generally observing the world around me. So, the foundation was laid for me to become some sort of creative. I was lucky enough to go to a very good primary school, passed my 11+ and went to a grammar school, my art master was friends with the head tutor at our local art school and so I chose to study fine art. It turns out that all my friends were doing graphic design courses and said that you don't make any money in fine art until you're dead! (Which is true!). A chain of events and chance meetings that have led me to where I am now.
So, I swapped to graphic design, spent thirty years as a successful designer, had my own business, built a reputation and made some money. Then decided to pack it all in, move to Devon, build a house, open a gallery and paint pictures.
But what if I hadn't gone to good schools, if I hadn't met all the people that had had an influence on my life, where would I be now? It has not all been plain sailing, there have been hard times as well as good. What if I hadn't met my wife who has been a massive support to my career? I joke with her that it was her that made me a millionaire... I was a multi-millionaire before I met her! Seriously though, your life will be determined by the decisions you make and the people you meet.
Now, I am acquainted with quite a few millionaires, indeed multi-millionaires, most with very little education that just got lucky! Now that's not strictly true. Opportunities came their way and they grabbed them with both hands and made their own luck. I never resent anybody's success, especially if they have done it the hard way, it's just that most of us don't recognise an opportunity or don't have the guts to take a risk. Ask most of these millionaires if they have ever failed and I guarantee they will all say yes, it's just they never gave up.
Success comes in many forms, it doesn't have to be monetary, but don't bemoan your luck or be envious of other people, go and do something about it. Follow your dream, whether it be a musician, an artist or to learn a new language, to run a marathon or fly a plane, take that first step, who knows where it may lead?
Don't be left thinking, what if...?
